As the travel landscape evolves, so does the luggage industry in India. With a surge in demand for stylish, durable, and eco-friendly luggage, brands are stepping up to innovate and cater to the needs of the modern traveler. Leading this revolution are Indian brands like Mokobara, Nasher Miles, EUME, and Uppercase, each carving a niche in the global market. They are not just reshaping the aesthetics of travel gear but also setting new standards in functionality and environmental responsibility.

Innovating for the Modern Traveler

Nasher Miles, co-founded by Shruti Kedia Daga in 2017, emerged from a keen observation of the market's oligopolistic nature, dominated by VIP, Samsonite, and Safari. "Back in 2014, e-commerce was nascent in India, and we sensed a significant opportunity. The online customer was looking for more stylish options, and traditional players weren't addressing this need," says Daga. This insight led to the creation of Nasher Miles, a brand that stands out for its vibrant colors and extensive variety.

Uppercase, founded by Sudip Ghose, is carving a niche in the sustainable luggage market. Ghose was inspired by the growing demand for eco-friendly travel products among younger consumers and new-age travelers. "We position ourselves as pioneers in sustainable innovation, focusing on lifestyle and travel needs while emphasizing environmental responsibility," he shares.

EUME, under the vision of Naina Parekh, has redefined luxury luggage in India. "We noticed a gap in the market for stylish, high-quality, and ergonomic travel solutions that cater to the needs of modern travelers," says Parekh. EUME's products are designed with a focus on both style and functionality, incorporating features like ergonomic design, built-in charging ports, and innovative storage solutions.

Catering to Consumer Preferences

The brands' commitment to understanding and catering to consumer preferences has been pivotal. Nasher Miles targets young, urban consumers who prioritize style and affordability. "Our customer base is primarily the 24-35 age bracket in metro cities. They are conscious of how they look and want their luggage to reflect their style, we help the Indian traveler look more fashionable through our luggage " Daga explains. By launching 6-10 new collections annually, each with multiple color options, Nasher Miles ensures that their customers always have something fresh and trendy to choose from.

Uppercase's products are distinguished by their use of eco-friendly materials and innovative design features, such as lightweight construction and stylish aesthetics. "Our target audience includes younger travel enthusiasts who prioritize sustainability," Ghose notes. This demographic's preference for minimalistic designs and integrated technology has significantly influenced Uppercase's product development. "By highlighting our commitment to sustainability and product innovation, we aim to differentiate ourselves in the evolving luggage market," says Ghose.

EUME's target audience includes business professionals, frequent travelers, and tech-savvy individuals who seek convenience and quality in their travel gear. "Consumers today are looking for durable, lightweight luggage that can keep up with their busy lifestyles while also making a fashion statement, our luggage is designed to exceed the expectations of discerning travelers, combining superior craftsmanship with innovative features," says Parekh.

Navigating the Market Dynamics

The luggage industry in India is witnessing remarkable growth, driven by increasing travel, rising disposable incomes, and evolving consumer preferences. According to industry reports, the Indian luggage market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.8 percent from 2021 to 2026. This growth is fueled by the demand for premium and fashionable luggage, as well as the rising popularity of e-commerce platforms.

Nasher Miles has capitalized on this trend by becoming one of the top five luggage brands on marketplaces like Amazon and Flipkart. Their appearance on Shark Tank India, where they secured a deal from all five sharks, further boosted their brand recognition. "Today, retailers are eager to stock Nasher Miles products. We've expanded to over 173 shops across the country and plan to open exclusive brand,” Daga reflects.

Uppercase's growth has been bolstered by investments from sustainability-focused investors and venture capitalists. These funds have been utilized to develop innovative products, expand market presence, and invest in marketing and distribution channels. "We have experienced steady revenue growth, driven by increasing consumer demand for sustainable products, our focus on sustainability and ethical practices resonates with consumers, fueling our growth trajectory,” Ghose notes.

EUME, with its emphasis on luxury and practicality, has carved a niche for itself in the competitive market. "Our commitment to understanding what our customers really want and blending luxury with practicality has set us apart," Parekh asserts. The brand's future plans include expanding their product line with new innovations and collections that cater to evolving consumer preferences.

Into the Future

The future of India's luggage industry looks promising, with brands like Nasher Miles, Uppercase, and EUME leading the way in innovation and sustainability. Nasher Miles aims to be a strong number two or three player in the Indian luggage market, with plans to move more manufacturing to India. "Our made-in-India presence will be a lot stronger in the coming years, our made-in-India presence will be a lot stronger in the coming years," Daga reveals.

Uppercase is set to expand its product line with luggage options featuring enhanced smart features and new sustainable materials. "We aim to expand our offline reach via exclusive stores and establish a global market presence," Ghose shares.

EUME's future plans include offering more customizable options and enhancing customer experience through innovative features. "We will continue to focus on sustainability and ethical practices, using eco-friendly materials and manufacturing processes," Parekh states.
